Grove House leads the way in supporting patients, families and friends living with cancer or a life-threatening illness in Dacorum, Harpenden and St Albans.
This unique and forward-thinking service provides specialist care and advice from the time of diagnosis focusing on the individual and promoting patient choice.
Grove House is a hospice with a difference: Most patients with cancer or other life-threatening illnesses would like to live at home, so Grove House offers clinical support at our Robert Runcie day hospice, through individual treatments and consultations, or home visits.
Each patient’s care is tailored to his/her own needs, for example pain reduction/symptom control from the specialist nurses, help with mobility from the physio- or occupational therapist, spiritual or emotional support and counselling from the spiritual care or family support team, and relaxation
We also provide respite support and counselling for carers who can become overwhelmed or exhausted and rarely receive any support themselves.
All our services are free of charge.
In 2009/10 the fundraising needs of Grove House will rise to over £1 million. Why?
We will be changing the face of care for the dying in the St Albans and Harpenden area. We believe that the seriously ill need to be given choice about where they spend their last days. At present, only 20% of residents in this area are able to die at home, compared to the national average of 25%. In 2008 Grove House will be creating a Grove House Hospice at Home service which will see a team of nurses on hand to ensure that the seriously ill can be cared for in the security and comfort of their own homes, without the need to be transferred to hospital when their situation becomes critical. In areas where this service currently exists, the percentage of people able to die at home rises to over 60%.
